An artist with a preference for illustration, a skilled photographer who loves to draw and an experienced musician who once pursued writing. Always in the thick of it, either drawing or doing it. He's raced cars at 180 mph, jumped out of a perfectly built airplane, climbed El Capitan, surfed the North Shore and scrapped alongside The Dark Knight and The Amazing Spider-Man. I feel that the finished painting captures the aesthetic essence of the telescope and the mood of awe I felt within myself and the other artists around me during this experience. ![]() Painting the James Webb from direct observation was a lot like my plein air painting experiences, because of the time limits and busy atmosphere of the viewing area. It also forces me to distill my subject to its most important essence. However, it imbues the finished work with a sense of immediacy and energy that for me, can be lost when working from photos in the studio. It can be a challenge, because it means creating a painting within a limited period of time before light and atmospheric conditions change, as well as coping with all sorts of weather and distractions. One component of my artistic practice is "plein air" painting, which means painting the landscape from direct observation. It was located on the roof of the university’s physics building for 61 years.During the Artist Event at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center on November 2, 2016, I was able to complete this 22" x 15" watercolor painting of the James Webb Space Telescope from direct observation over the course of about two hours. originally donated the telescope to Western Reserve College (later Western Reserve University and today Case Western Reserve University). Brashear Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a division of American Optical Company, ground the telescope’s optics. Ralph Mueller Observatory contains a 10½-inch refracting telescope built by the Warner & Swasey Co. The Ralph Mueller Observatory is currently closed for construction. The Museum also employs an LED lighting system, which boasts the lowest power consumption for this type of lighting. Guests can see astronomical bodies draw trails as they move through the sky, while planets zoom in with full motion and 3D texturing as they move to the foreground. The new Digistar 7 software far exceeds the capabilities of a classic planetarium projector, while its digital projection system continues to allow our astronomers to guide visitors on virtual trips through the Universe and beyond. In December 2022, the Shafran Planetarium reopened after a brief closure to install new seating and updated software from Evans & Sutherland.
